Raïssa sees the world through rose-coloured glasses
DR Congo

For four years, Raïssa, a seven-year-old girl from the Congo, did not see the world as we see it. Due to cataracts in both eyes, she gradually went blind. Her surroundings were literally plunged into darkness. Going to school, playing, simply walking around – it was a daily challenge. Without good eyesight, Raïssa couldn’t just be a normal child. Her parents were worried about her future, because without treatment, her world would remain in darkness forever.
Saved from blindness
Thanks to people like you, Raïssa underwent a successful operation on both eyes at the Sainte-Yvonne Eye Hospital in Lubumbashi. A team of specialists restored her sight, enabling her to truly take in her surroundings for the first time in years. For Raïssa and her family, this was a miracle. The first moments after the operation were overwhelming: for the first time, she could really see her parents’ faces, make out the colours around her and discover what the world really looks like.
Seeing clearly with glasses
After receiving the proper aftercare and undergoing a few check-ups at the hospital, there was just one thing left to do: get her very first pair of glasses. She chose beautiful pink ones! With her new glasses, Raïssa can now finally go to school. She is learning to read, making friends and playing without fear.
A rosy future
For her parents, it is a huge relief that their daughter can see again. Including because the operation and the glasses were free. For the family, who have hardly any money, this makes a world of difference. And Raïssa? She sees the future clearly and sharply through her new pink glasses. With a beaming smile and full of enthusiasm, she looks to the future. Now she can make her dreams come true.
Help a child like Raïssa.
